What to Expect After Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are a popular non-surgical option to restore volume and fullness in the face. This minimally invasive treatment can help replenish the skin for a more youthful appearance.

As aesthetics specialists, we understand the desire to know what to anticipate after making the decision to undergo dermal fillers. Post-treatment expectations vary from patient to patient. However, the recovery process and downtime are minimal and side effects generally disappear within a few days.

How does Dermal Filler work?

Dermal fillers, also known as soft tissue fillers, are gels that are injected into the skin to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, plump up thin lips, and add fullness to contours like the cheeks or jawline. Dermal fillers work by replenishing lost volume under the skin. As we age, collagen and elastin production decreases, resulting in sagging and wrinkles. Dermal and lip fillers counteract this process by replacing lost volume to lift, smooth and contour the skin.

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is the most commonly used dermal filler material due to its natural presence in the skin. HA fillers work by hydrating the skin from within, allowing it to retain more moisture for a smoother, wrinkle-reduced youthful appearance. The effects are visible immediately and last 6-12 months on average. With repeated treatments approximately every 4-6 months, dermal fillers can help slow the visible signs of ageing for natural-looking, long-lasting results.

Dermal Filler Aftercare

Immediately after treatment, it's perfectly normal to experience some temporary side effects as your body adjusts to the injections. It's normal for patients to report:

  • Mild swelling or bruising

  • Redness

  • Tenderness or discomfort near the injection sites

These can be experienced for a few hours or up to a couple of days after the treatment, as this is your body's natural healing process at work.

To minimise potential swelling, keep the treated area elevated and apply a cool compress for the first 24 hours. Over-the-counter medications like paracetamol or ibuprofen may help relieve any lingering tenderness. While bruising can occur in some cases, it is usually mild and fades within a week. Contact our clinic right away if you experience severe pain, extensive bruising, or other worrying symptoms.

Recovery Process

The first effects of your dermal filler treatment will be noticeable within a few hours, though recovery time and maximum results may take 1-2 weeks to develop as the filler integrates naturally into your tissues. During this time, the filler plumps up surrounding tissues for a smooth, volumised appearance. Some minor tweaking or additional treatments spaced 4-6 months apart may be needed to achieve your ultimate goals.

Fillers usually last 6-12 months on average before another treatment is needed for upkeep as your natural volume decreases. With time and massaging of the treated areas, any residual swelling or lumps will dissipate. By 1-2 weeks post-procedure, you should be able to resume all normal activities without issue once the immediate side effects have subsided.

Side Effects of Injectable Dermal Fillers

While generally very safe when administered by a qualified practitioner, dermal fillers do carry some risks based on your individual health profile and response. Here are some potential side effects to be aware of:

  • Bruising and swelling at injection sites

  • Lumps or bumps under the skin ("nodules") from over-correction in certain areas. Massaging the treated area can often disperse these.

  • Asymmetry or irregularities if the filler is not applied evenly. A skilled clinician can smooth this out with further treatment.

  • Changes in skin sensation, such as tenderness or numbness, may occur in a small percentage of patients, usually lessening over time.

Remember, serious complications are very uncommon when performed by an accredited provider. As with any aesthetic treatment, be sure to choose a qualified and experienced practitioner.

Aftercare Advice

Following a few simple aftercare steps will help maximise your dermal filler results and minimise potential side effects:

  1. No strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, sun exposure, and saunas for 24-48 hours to prevent unnecessary swelling or pressure in the treated areas. Gentle exercise is fine once initial tenderness subsides.

  2. Gently massage cream or serum into the treated areas daily using an upward, outward motion. Don't touch or massage the filler for 1-2 weeks as it fully sets. This helps contour the filler and prevent lumpiness.

  3. It's best to avoid wearing make-up for a few days on the treatment areas and use broad-spectrum sunscreen on the treated areas daily to protect against sun damage.

  4. Watch for signs of infection, like increasing redness, pain or pus and contact us immediately if they occur.

  5. Book a follow-up appointment 1-2 weeks after your initial treatment so our team can ensure you're healing properly and address any concerns.

Following these simple steps will optimise your dermal filler results and comfort during the recovery period.

Dermal Filler FAQs

How long do dermal filler results last?

Most dermal filler treatments provide subtle enhancements that gradually dissipate over 6-12 months. Regular touch-up appointments every 4-6 months are recommended to maintain your desired look.

Will dermal fillers hurt?

While some mild discomfort can be expected, our practitioners are highly skilled at minimising any pain. We use topical anaesthetic creams prior to injections to reduce sensitivity. Most patients tolerate the minor pinpricks well.

Is it safe to treat multiple areas at once?

Yes, we frequently boost volume in more than one facial region during a single appointment when appropriate for your individual goals. Just keep in mind more product means a slightly longer recovery period.

What areas can be augmented?

Common zones include the cheeks, chin, jawline, lips and lines on the forehead and around the nose/mouth. In skilled hands, fillers can enhance any facial feature lacking fullness or projection for a more balanced appearance.
