Fillers or Anti-Wrinkle Injections - What's for Me?

Derma fillers and anti-wrinkle injections are both popular treatments that can reverse or mask the signs of ageing in areas such as the forehead, around the eyes, lips, cheeks and around the mouth.

But how do these treatments work exactly? And what are the differences between the two? Most importantly, which treatment – or combination of treatments – could work for you?

Fillers

Derma fillers are hyaluronic acid injections which instantly bring volume to the injected area. Fillers are injected directly into wrinkles and into cheeks and lips, adding volume and lessening the appearance of ageing signs. Results of derma fillers are seen almost instantly and can last for many months.

Anti-Wrinkle Injections

These treatments involve small amounts of botulinum toxin being injected into one’s muscles, causing relaxation by mild paralysis. Nerve actions are blocked and the lines that can be caused by them reduce in appearance, with new wrinkles effectively being prevented from appearing.

Anti-wrinkle injections are extremely popular for the treatment of expression lines, especially around the eyes and on the forehead. Results are visible within 4 – 7 days, with maximum results within two weeks. The results can last for up to 3 – 4 months and are cumulative, meaning that people need less treatments as time goes on.

Do the Treatments Hurt?

Any treatments involving injections will result in discomfort; the pain will vary from patient to patient and depends on individuals’ pain thresholds. Filler injections can generate a short term burning sensation, whilst anti-wrinkle injections can have sting-like effects that last a few seconds.

Are There Risks?

Risks of derma fillers include bruising and allergic reactions. Anti-wrinkle injections can result in temporary side effects such as drooping, bruising, muscle weakness, headaches, swelling and numbness. Longer-term side effects are extremely rare and usually occur when the effects of the injection spread to other muscles.

In all cases, our professionals will discuss all concerns and risks during our patients’ initial consultations. Ultimately the right choice of treatment will vary from individual to individual.
